Heatley Medical and Skin Care Centre is a comprehensive GP practice with a specialised Skin Care and Skin Cancer Unit dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of skin cancer. In Australia, approximately two in three people will develop a skin cancer during their lifetime, making early detection and treatment particularly important in sun-soaked North Queensland.
Our doctors maintain advanced training and certification in skin cancer medicine and surgery, keeping up to date with the latest evidence-based developments in diagnosis and management. We are committed to bringing high-quality, modern skin cancer services to Townsville and North Queensland.
Using advanced dermoscopy, digital dermoscopy, and total body photography, we are able to detect skin cancers at their earliest stages, with particular emphasis on the early identification of melanoma. Early diagnosis can significantly improve treatment outcomes and reduce the need for more extensive procedures.
As a RACGP-accredited teaching practice, we regularly host medical students and junior doctors undertaking further training. This commitment to education ensures that our team remains engaged with current best practice while contributing to the development of future healthcare professionals.
We believe that patient education is a vital part of skin cancer care. We take the time to explain individual risks, skin cancer prevention strategies, sun protection measures, and options for reversing sun damage. Our services range from topical and field treatments for sun-damaged skin and early skin cancers to advanced skin cancer surgery performed in our state-of-the-art procedure theatre using specialised surgical equipment.
We work closely with your regular GP, providing timely communication regarding diagnoses, pathology results, treatment recommendations, and follow-up plans. Where required, we also coordinate referrals and ongoing care with dermatologists, plastic surgeons, oncologists, and other specialists to ensure comprehensive, patient-centred care.
As a proud Garrison City, Townsville is home to many Defence personnel, veterans, and their families. Heatley Medical and Skin Care Centre is committed to supporting our DVA patients with accessible skin cancer care.

Dermoscopy is an advanced skin imaging technique that helps detect skin cancers and assess suspicious skin lesions with greater accuracy. At Heatley Medical and Skin Care Centre, we use the Canfield & MoleMax Lite Digital Dermatoscope alongside other modern dermatoscopes to examine skin lesions, differentiate between various types of skin cancers, and monitor changes over time. This technology supports early diagnosis and enables us to provide a comprehensive management, treatment, and follow-up plan tailored to each patient’s needs.

The Canfield IntelliStudio® IS 2D Total Body Photography System provides high-quality, standardized full-body images to assist in the early detection and monitoring of skin cancers. It is particularly valuable for patients with multiple moles, previous skin cancers, or high-risk skin types. By comparing images over time, new or changing lesions can be identified more accurately, improving early diagnosis and reducing unnecessary biopsies. At Heatley Medical and Skin Care Centre, it complements dermoscopy for comprehensive skin cancer surveillance.

Heatley Medical and Skin Care Centre offers comprehensive skin cancer surgery performed by highly trained and experienced skin cancer doctors. Procedures range from punch and shave biopsies to standard skin excisions with elliptical closures and advanced reconstructive techniques, including local flaps, wedge repairs, full-thickness skin grafts, and split-thickness skin grafts. These specialised procedures are particularly valuable for complex skin cancers involving the face, scalp, ears, lips, neck, and lower legs, where both cancer clearance and cosmetic outcomes are important. Detailed post-operative wound care, regular follow-up, and adjunctive LED light therapy help support optimal healing and recovery, especially in complex surgical cases.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses a light-activated cream, such as ALA or Methyl ALA, together with a specialised light source to treat solar keratoses, early squamous cell carcinoma (SCC in situ/Bowen’s disease), and superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC). PDT targets abnormal skin cells while preserving healthy tissue and usually offers excellent cosmetic results. Success rates are high, with clearance rates of around 80–90% for solar keratoses and superficial BCC, and approximately 70–90% for SCC in situ when appropriately selected and monitored.
