ECZEMA / ATOPIC DERMATITIS

Eczema is a chronic, relapsing skin condition that can be itchy, uncomfortable, and distressing for both children and adults. It is often linked with allergy, asthma, and hay fever, but is also influenced by skin barrier dysfunction and environmental triggers such as irritants, heat, and infections.

Eczema: Separating Myths from Facts

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a common chronic skin condition that affects both children and adults. Unfortunately, many myths surrounding eczema can lead to frustration and delayed treatment.

Myth: Eczema is caused by poor hygiene.
Fact: Eczema is not caused by being unclean. It results from a combination of genetic factors, an impaired skin barrier, and immune system dysfunction.

Myth: Eczema is contagious.
Fact: Eczema cannot be passed from one person to another.

Myth: Steroid creams are always harmful.
Fact: When used correctly under medical guidance, topical corticosteroids are safe and effective in controlling inflammation and preventing flare-ups.

At the Centre for Allergy & Asthma Townsville (CAAT), we provide detailed education and personalised eczema management plans focused on restoring the skin barrier and reducing flare-ups. Treatment may include regular moisturisers, topical anti-inflammatory creams, trigger identification and avoidance strategies, and infection management when required.

We also support patients and families with practical advice to control itching, improve sleep quality, reduce skin damage from scratching, and minimise the impact of eczema on daily life. Our goal is to help patients achieve better long-term control, healthier skin, and an improved quality of life.
